A greenhouse gives you a patch of ground where you decide much of the weather. That is the whole case for building one, and a paper published at the end of 2020 by researchers at King Faisal University in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, says it in one line: as a controllable environment, greenhouses are the perfect environment to improve crops’ production and quality in harsh climate regions. One of the authors sits in the university’s Date Palm Research Center of Excellence.
Below are the benefits that hold up when you check them against published work, plus an honest look at whether you could grow your own dates under glass.
You get to steer the microclimate
The Al-Ahsa team, writing in the journal Sensors, wired every sensor, controller and actuator in a commercial-sized greenhouse to one cloud platform and grew cucumbers in a soilless medium. They reported a higher cucumber yield and better quality. Water use efficiency improved, and the greenhouse used less electrical energy.
A backyard build will not have a cloud platform. The habit behind it still applies at any size. Put a thermometer and a humidity meter inside before you plant anything, read them at the same hours for a couple of weeks, and only then decide what to grow.
A second life for date palm waste
Here the date palm turns up as a growing material rather than a crop. Researchers in Riyadh, with a greenhouse horticulture unit from Wageningen in the Netherlands, grew sweet peppers in date palm waste and in rockwool (Plants, 2023). The rockwool plants grew taller, with thicker stems and more leaf area. Total yield, the number of marketable fruits and fruit quality showed no difference between the two.
The date palm waste had one clear edge. It gave significantly fewer unmarketable fruits and fewer fruits with blossom end rot. Both substrates needed the same amount of water, although rockwool used it more efficiently.
A trial from the University of Hormozgan in Iran (BMC Plant Biology, 2024) used date palm compost for cucumber seedlings in a greenhouse. A mix of date palm compost and vermicompost, treated with a weak pistachio wood vinegar solution, outperformed the other combinations tested. Its growth gains were measured against untreated seedlings in coco peat and peat moss.
Where greenhouse pests come from
A 2021 review in the journal Insects, led by Wageningen researchers, argues that most greenhouse pests in temperate climates are of exotic origin and get in mainly on transported plant material. The practical step is simple: look over every new seedling or cutting before it goes inside.
The same review notes that planting around a greenhouse is heavily debated. A wider mix of plants can draw in natural enemies that move inside and keep pests down, but the authors say how to get that benefit without raising pest numbers or virus risk still needs more study.

Could you grow a date palm in one?
The FAO handbook on date palm cultivation sets out what the tree needs. It is grown in arid and semi-arid regions with long, hot summers, little or no rain, and very low air humidity while the fruit ripens. Growth is active above 7°C, peaks at about 32°C and holds steady until 38 to 40°C. The fruiting period, from fruit set to maturity, runs about 120 to 200 days depending on the variety and conditions.
A roof keeps rain off the bunches, and that matters, because FAO calls the soft rutab and the fully ripe tamar stages the most sensitive to rain, which brings rotting and fruit fall. The air is a separate problem. High humidity just before the khalal stage leaves cuts in the skin, and soft fruit can drop and lose its commercial value. FAO also notes that most commercial date plantations in the USA and Israel are not intercropped with other plants or fruit trees, because these raise the humidity of the plantation. Sharing a greenhouse with vegetables would go against that practice.
Buying the fruit while the greenhouse grows
Malaysia has no commercial date-growing trade, so every date sold here is imported. Date Fruits handles everything from retail buying to wholesale supply and delivers across the country; our about us page has the details, and the contact page has a form for questions. If the date pit interests you as much as the fruit, our piece on date seed coffee covers what roasted pits really are.
